Kamogelo Dumelakgosi sat with Neo Makgale to explore what takes her to the skies
Meet Neo Makgale, a trailblazer whose journey proves that passion, perseverance, and vision can redefine what is possible. While pursuing a certificate in Communication and Public Relations, she made the decision to pause her studies when an unexpected opportunity arose. A chance to become a flight attendant. She went on to work for South African Airways and Qatar Airways, spending over a decade traveling to more than 80 countries. Along the way, she immersed herself in diverse cultures and connected with global leaders across industries.
During her years as a flight attendant, Makgale gained extensive insight into the aviation industry, developing a deep understanding of its operations, challenges, and dynamics. Her role involved regular interaction with pilots, ground staff, and managers, broadening her perspective and knowledge. These experiences not only expanded her worldview but sparked a bold ambition: to carve out her own path in the aviation industry. That spark would eventually lead to the founding of her own company, a defining leap fueled by purpose and vision. Both her hands-on experience and strategic networking significantly contributed to her comprehensive understanding of the global aviation business landscape.
From Cabin Crew to the Boardroom
Makgale’s years in the skies were more than just about service and travel; they became an education in global business. Through countless conversations with business leaders and industry innovators, she began to envision a way to blend her three passions, tourism, aviation, and hospitality, into a single enterprise. The idea was exciting, but the journey from concept to reality was far from straightforward. Funding was a hurdle. Building a credible business network in an industry that thrives on connections proved equally challenging, but Makgale’s determination outweighed the obstacles. “When I took myself seriously, people began to take me seriously too,” she recalls. This mindset shift became her turning point. She silenced her self-doubt, embraced her potential, and took the plunge.
In 2015, NEOHEIGHTS Aviation Group was born, a company that started modestly with private chartering and commercial flight services and has since grown into an influential player in the aviation space.
A Global Footprint with Local Impact
NEOHEIGHTS Aviation Group distinguished itself as a key participant during the recent SMME Consultative Meeting and the official launch of the Sekhukhune TVET Rapid Incubator Centre. The event, presided over by the Minister of Small Business Development, Stella Thembisa Ndabeni, formed part of a broader national initiative aimed at empowering local entrepreneurs and fostering inclusive economic growth.
The newly established Rapid Incubator Centre is positioned to act as a catalyst for small business development by providing essential resources, support, and infrastructure to entrepreneurs across the Sekhukhune region and beyond. In alignment with this mission, NEOHEIGHTS Aviation aims to take an active role by forming strategic partnerships with the local educational institution.
“These platforms are vital for rural entrepreneurs, as they provide access to essential skills, mentorship, and networks that are critical for their success. Integrating mentorship programmes with the aviation sector opens up international market opportunities for rural communities. Through collaboration with government and institutions like these, we are able to develop effective strategies to support young people and create platforms for international skills exchange. Aviation is inherently global, and when we join forces to share knowledge and empower the youth, we contribute to building a better, more connected world.”
Makgale further emphasises that a business must respond to the needs of the people it serves, and that begins with meaningful investment in human potential. Through these collaborations, the company is facilitating access to skills development programmes, mentorship opportunities, and joint research initiatives.
A Life of Altitude
Looking ahead, Makgale envisions a bold and expansive future for NEOHEIGHTS Aviation. Having already laid the groundwork for growth in Southern Africa, her strategic focus is now on extending operations into North, East, and West Africa. This continental expansion is part of her broader ambition to position NEOHEIGHTS as a leading African aviation company with a truly global footprint. “Our long-term goal is to become a continental player with international reach,” she explains. “By scaling our operations across Africa and building strong global partnerships, we aim to elevate African aviation and create opportunities that transcend borders.”
Makgale credits her breakthrough to cultivating unwavering self-discipline and confidence. “I told myself, ‘I know I can do this,’” she says, reflecting on the moment she fully stepped into her role as a business leader. That inner conviction became the driving force behind NEOHEIGHTS Aviation Group growth.
Makgale’s breakthrough came when she finally gained the confidence to believe in her own potential and realised that she was fully capable of building something impactful. That moment of self-belief became the catalyst for her journey into entrepreneurship. Her advice to anyone starting a business is simple but powerful: ask questions. “Being inquisitive is a step towards success,” she says. “I’m all about empowerment, and I want the youth, and anyone with a dream, to know that it is possible. If you know you want to do it but you’re scared to do it, do it, do it scared.” She emphasises that the desire to succeed must come from within, adding: “You have to want to do it for yourself, that’s where the real drive begins.”
At the heart of Makgale’s identity is its guiding brand philosophy: “Africa first in everything we do.” This isn’t just a slogan, it reflects the company’s unwavering commitment to the continent and its people. NEOHEIGHTS Aviation Group was founded with a sole purpose: to set a high standard, a principle its leadership believes is fundamental to building a sustainable and respected business. By striving for excellence in every aspect of their work, they aim to set a benchmark not just for themselves, but for the broader African business landscape.
Reaching New Heights
Makgale’s visionary leadership is deeply rooted in her spiritual faith. For Makgale, her belief in God is not merely a personal conviction but a guiding principle that shapes every facet of her business approach. “In everything I do, I seek God’s vision and guidance, and I’ve never been led astray,” she states. This unwavering commitment to faith and integrity underpins her dedication to sustainable growth, ethical leadership, and meaningful impact within both the aviation industry and the broader community her organisation serves.
From humble beginnings to expanding her business to visiting over 80 countries, Makgale’s story is an inspiration to many. Her commitment to showcasing African culture and heritage through her brand, as well as her dedication to empowering women and rural communities, make her a true leader in her field. As she continues to break barriers and push boundaries, Makgale has published a leadership book in Australia together with other global luminaries on leadership. She is also working on a new project—publishing her own book. This upcoming publication will undoubtedly share valuable insights and lessons from her remarkable journey, inspiring a new generation of entrepreneurs and leaders. With her faith, resilience, determination, passion, and innovative spirit, Makgale is sure to continue making waves in the aviation industry.
