A world-first marvel of engineering
In mid-2023, Mafika Engineering achieved an extraordinary feat when they unveiled the colossal zero-hour rebuilt Cummins QSK78 engine.
The QSK78 engine, which is a remarkable V-18 originally crafted by the Industrial Power Alliance (IPA) technical joint venture between Cummins and Komatsu, is designed to power haul and mine trucks with up to 400 ton payload capacities.
The Mafika QSK78 engine demonstrated exceptional performance during extensive dynamometer testing. It achieved an astounding output of approximately 3 500hp and 12 500nm, meeting all specifications with flying colours.
This powerhouse will be powering the mighty 250t Komatsu 960E ultra-class haul truck. As Komatsu's largest and highest payload capacity haul truck, it offers an impressive capacity of up to 360 short tons (327 t). (Graydon Epstein)
The benefits of remanufacturing
Through remanufacturing mission critical engines for its customers, Mafika Engineering allows its customers to participate in the circular economy. Remanufacturing offers mining houses an opportunity to recycle existing resources, restoring the efficiency and output of their equipment at a lower price for OEM-comparable quality.
Globally, remanufacturing has been receiving growing attention and the heavy machinery industry strives to not only extend the life of high value mining assets, but also reduce waste and emissions. The environmental benefits of sustainable remanufacturing are numerous, including reduced consumption of raw materials, reduced energy consumption during the remanufacturing process, and significantly reduced waste sent to landfills.
There is also a positive impact on power consumption. Studies show that rebuilt engines need 50% less energy to produce compared to a new engine, with annual energy savings by remanufacturing worldwide equal to the electricity generated by five nuclear power plants or 10.7 million barrels of crude oil.
