Celebrating greatness

robbie_PICAs_opt“I believe that South Africa is the most beautiful place on Earth. Admittedly, I am biased, but when you combine the natural beauty of South Africa with the friendliness and cultural diversity of our people, and the fact that the region is a haven for Africa’s most splendid wildlife, then I think even the most scrupulous critic would agree that we have been blessed with a truly wonderful land. I would like to extend a personal invitation to you to come and see for yourself the splendour of South Africa. I know that my people will be delighted to welcome you and I think you will be enchanted by their warmth and hospitality. I am equally sure that you will enjoy our culture, our cuisine and the warmth of our people.” – Nelson Mandela, President of South Africa, 1994-1999

After experiencing the 2010 Fifa Soccer World Cup firsthand and watching and listening to all and sundry from overseas waxing lyrical about our country, our people and our warmth, I can only resonate with the words from the great Mandela as quoted above.

It is that special time of year again when we pay tribute to the world’s greatest statesman and peacemaker. This special edition of Leadership honours him on his 92nd birthday. Once again, the month of July will hold birthday celebrations from Madison Square Garden in New York to Qunu in the Transkei.

We are honoured and privileged to have Zelda la Grange share her adventures at the side of Mandela over the last 16 years in an exclusive interview. The only person who has spent more time with Madiba than La Grange is his wife, Graça Machel. Thanks very much Zelda, we truly appreciate your time, particularly with the heavy schedule you have at this time of year.

Last year, the United Nations declared 18 July “Nelson Mandela International Day” in recognition of the former South African president’s contribution to the culture of peace and freedom.

In a month in which we have been so blessed, with South Africa being beamed into millions of homes around the globe and enjoyed and savoured by so many international tourists, it seems like a fitting end to the month of July. I also think this will not be the last birthday we will be celebrating with Madiba.

When Leadership asked La Grange what she may do once her Khulu (grandfather) passes away, she candidly replies, “It may be a big mistake to think that he may be gone and I will still be around; there is a good chance I could go first.” She certainly seems sure he will be with us for sometime yet.

From her lips to God’s ears. Happy birthday, Tata!
