“The man is the head, but the woman is the neck. And she can turn the head any way she wants!” advised the mother to her daughter in the movie, My Big Fat Greek Wedding.
Where did it all begin? Let me explain. It all began in one of the most crucial periods in our history. Two hundred thousand years ago, Man began to haul himself out of his cave. After beating a rock into a submissive spear, we would head off in hunting packs for weeks and months on end. While we were out bonding ‘primitively’ and chasing our prey, the women were left behind.
Now, there are only so many berries one can pick; so many hides one can dry; so many caves to decorate and so many cave kids to co-ordinate before one feels the need for extra stimuli...
So women began to converse and therefore studied and debated all things worldly, while the men happily snorted encouragement to each other and ran across the valley chasing dinner. This is probably why a man can still happily sit and have a connection with another man, looking at the coals of the braai for four hours, grunting occasionally; while a woman judges and is judged by the conversation made within her equivalent four hours of conversation!
After centuries and centuries, man slowly but surely realised that while he might have changed very little, women had changed immensely. For some men, it was not too intimidating. As long as we could still “go out with the boys” and hunt/conquer our linear goals, we silently accepted our simplistic drive and future fortune.
For other men, it was different. Some men tried, studying with great care, to determine exactly how the woman’s brain functioned. They tried to see how it had evolved and how to counteract it but, alas, the most intelligent of the lot reconciled themselves to the fact that such a question could never be answered. Only a very few remain, who steadfastly believe that men could ever catch up.
Men basically learnt to accept the truth a long time ago. Deep down, we have always known who the stronger sex is; we merely want women to humour our simplicity and not treat us as if we are inferior because, in fact, we are not. We simply have a hell of a lot less grey area than women do, and prefer to keep it that way.
Women have evolved over time to question, consider and compare everything, while men still enjoy the pack, the chase and the focus on conquering one goal at a time. We find much enjoyment and gratification in our simplicity. I would therefore urge all women to follow the mother’s advice from the quote above, and your ‘neck’ will always make the ‘head’ of the house move in any direction you want it to! But why am I wasting your time telling you this? You all knew this already, didn’t you?
I wish you all a very Happy Women’s Day, and we hope you enjoy our special Women’s tribute edition.
