FTI launches a Certificate Programme in Project Management Practice

Faculty Training Institute (FTI), leading national Business Analysis and Project Management training specialist, is launching a Certificate Programme in Project Management Practice. The four month modular programme replaces their signature Diploma in IS Project Management. The remodelled project management programme forms part of a comprehensive relaunch of FTI’s entire portfolio of project management courses and will enable individuals to pursue career growth paths that can lead to a National Certificate in Project Management (a NQF level five) and professional qualifications accredited by the Project Management Institute (PMI®).

Since 1989, FTI’s Diploma in IS Project Management has been a landmark qualification for professional persons who manage IT projects. The qualification’s relevance and reputation within the industry for more than 20 years, has been based on its forward-thinking approach to the field of project management and its’ responsiveness to changes in market needs. “The Diploma in IS Project Management, therefore, in its old form is being retired and will be replaced by the Certificate Programme in Project Management Practice”, says Steve Erlank, MD of FTI. The new structure of the Certificate Programme in Project Management Practice is an essential building block for participants on their path to becoming professional project managers. The course is the first component of a planned series of programmes, whereby, upon completion, delegates will be able to achieve a National Certificate in Project Management (a NQF level five) qualification. It also sets delegates on their path to gaining international certification recognised by the PMI®.

The Certificate Programme in Project Management Practice will no longer have an IS specialisation, but will take a generic and practical project management skills approach. “The decision not to offer an IS specialisation in the newly relaunched Certificate Programme in Project Management Practice is bold, but strategic,” says Erlank. “It foresees demand from organisations competing for resources in the Knowledge Economy whereby specialist roles will disappear and the multi-skilled professional will be in demand.”

“As the modern world shifts towards a Knowledge Economy, old skills and paradigms become obsolete and new careers and roles emerge. These roles require multi-skilled individuals capable of high order-thinking and problem solving skills, across a range of industries and knowledge domains.

Project management will be a critical function in organisations of the future, but not necessarily performed just by project managers,” continues Erlank.

The Certificate programme in Project Management Practice is part of greater roll out plan of project management courses that will be introduced by FTI in the coming months. Carol Mould (PMP), the course designer and programme manager for FTI’s new portfolio of project management courses says that, “they will include a combination of part-time programmes and workshops tiered at project managers who are at different stages in their careers, from aspirant to seasoned project managers”.  “Even people who do not have the title of ‘project manager’, but who are responsible for creating business change and delivering business value, will benefit  from programmes in our portfolio.”

The Certificate Programme in Project Management Practice commences on 9 February 2012 in Cape Town and 16 February 2012 in Johannesburg.
