It is not often in our world of deadlines whooshing by our hamster wheel that we get to climb off, pop some champagne and give each other a hearty pat on the back.

So it was with much squealing delight and teeth-filled grins that we left the “Oscars of the South African magazine industry” – the PICA Awards – with not only the best publication in our category (Professional Services: Business to Business), but also with the Best Editor of the Year award: Business to Business, and the Watling Trophy for the best overall business-to-business magazine of the year!

The judges had this to say about Robbie Stammers, winning editor of 2009: “Leadership represents a high-quality product edited with strategic vision. Robbie has excelled in significantly growing the title in a volatile economic climate, displaying sound business acumen.

“Not only actively driving Leadership’s strategy across multiple platforms, Robbie also displays a commendable ability to network with leaders on a global platform as evidenced by the calibre of contributors and interview subjects. He edits with flair and commitment, and in doing so produces a magazine of which the media industry can be proud.”

On winning the overall Best Business-to-Business Magazine of the Year, the judges in that category did not hold back: “Leadership has emerged – Phoenix-like, from the ashes of virtual obscurity – as a respected and powerful voice for the southern African business community. The return to former glory is underscored by significant year-on-year copy sales and advertising, with the past recessionary year proving no exception.

“The magazine serves as a platform for the opinions of highly influential leaders in every sphere of the economy. Leadership’s longevity has not dulled its commitment to delivering diverse and relevant interviews, insights and intelligence to its high-worth selected target market.”

We could go on and on with more of the judges’ comments, but feel sure you get the idea. We want to congratulate Robbie on his editor award and congratulate each member of the Leadership team on the fantastic accolades with which we walked away. Each one – from advertising sales, to distribution, production, copy editors, deputy editor to our feature writers and contributors – can all take a well-deserved bow.

A special mention must go to art director Brent Meder, who takes the words and translates them into a visual feast.

What a wonderful way to end 2009 and start 2010! We wish all our readers the same.
