The 2008 MPASA PICA Awards were held in Cape Town at the Cape Town International Convention Centre last Friday, 21 November 2008 and attended by the glitterati of South Africa's magazine publishing history.
The 2008 awards saw a record number of entries - an increase of more than 100 over the previous year.
Celebrating individual creativity, honouring collective endeavour, the PICA Awards are South Africa's premier acknowledgements of excellence in the realm of magazine publishing.
With 42 categories, covering the spectrum from Customer to Consumer to B2B, the PICAs are proof positive that hard work, energy, and imagination pay off, not just in the bottom line, but in the much-valued currency of recognition from your peers.
Leadership magazine took home the PICA award in the prestigious ‘Professional Services’ category of the Business-to-Business magazine sector.
The category covers business in the private and public sectors. Business is defined in the broadest sense of the word as well as the training and management of professionals in any field.
The Cape-based magazine also took home a highly commended certificate for publishing excellence in the Best Cover category in the Business-to-Business sector.
Leadership was founded over 25 years ago by Hugh Murray, an icon in publishing and journalism, who passed away last year. The editor for the last 18 months, Robbie Stammers, was mentored by Murray in his youth and is overjoyed that they are restoring Leadership to its former glory.
“ It has been a wonderful year of rebuilding the Leadership brand so we were hoping for some sort of recognition’, said Stammers. “It’s not many publications that can boast having people like Barack Obama, Richard Branson, Mark Shuttleworth, Al Gore and Kofi Annan in their magazine in the last year. I am not talking about being profiled but personally writing for Leadership! So the accolades are greatly appreciated and we aim to get even more in 2009 and beyond”
