At the start of August, which is designated as Women’s Month in South Africa - as we celebrate the anniversary of the great Women's March of 1956, when women marched to the Union Buildings in protest against the carrying of pass books - it is appropriate to take stock of the status of women in our society. An assessment by a leading recruitment group finds that we are leading the pack internationally, but that parity with men is still some way off.

Iris Francis is the corporate social responsibility manager for the McCarthy Group, and is determined to make a difference.

Chatting to Francis at OR Tambo International Airport, it was made very clear that this woman has absolutely no interest in affirmative action. She does not see her appointment as an AA sinecure, though being the daughter of a Zulu chief (albeit one who had to struggle to assert his claim to chiefdom) was probably an advantage.

Sound policies and sensible measures that were put in place enabled African countries, and in particular South Africa, to ride out the storm of global recession and lead the world in recovery.

As Africa’s largest economy and the only African member of the G20 group of countries; and as an important member of the ever more influential group of emerging market countries – South Africa indeed occupies a significant place on the world economic stage.

Leading in turbulent times

South Africa, like other countries, has experienced many turbulent times; one of the most significant of which was the period from 1990 to 1994 and during its transition to democracy. At the global level, the world is emerging from a global financial and economic crisis that threatened to mirror the Great Depression. In each case, the country and the global economy have pulled through, and hopefully have learnt important lessons from those experiences.

Its not always what you think During the public service strike there was one very clever poster displayed on our TV-screens. In fact it was so clever that it was really a pity that the teacher who had her face framed by a hole in the middle of the poster was not in her class teaching. The poster did, however aptly describe how many of us also felt about the strike by then.
