The J&B Hive acts as a catalyst for Johannesburg-based entrepreneurs


An open call to help entrepreneurs to either turn their revolutionary idea into a reality or to take their existing business to the next level, saw over 400 applications from various disciplines. After a rigorous selection process, an eclectic mix of the region’s brilliant business minds were chosen to become a part of the ever-growing J&B Hive Johannesburg community.

These include, Walk Fresh (a boutique sneaker cleaning and shoe-care service), Leaders of the Future World (a creative media label that provides support to alternative artists), Black-Belt (motion graphics and visual effects), His and Hers Jams (a multi media music event), Blak Pepper (an online fashion store), Ekurhuleni Fashion Festival (a two-day runway and fashion exhibition event), African Legacy Project (a strategic media house, focused on branded entertainment and television productions), Kofi Afrika Food and Coffee Bar (Soweto€™s first premium coffee company), Social Yaruna (an out of the box, pop culture and art event), Tshepo The JeanMaker (a premium ready-to-wear clothing brand), We Make Better Music Than You (a music production academy by Raw X Studios and Productions), Bathu (a shoe line that tells the township story to the world), Wolf&Co (a cafe with good food and collaborations based in Tsakane) and I Am (is about supporting and bringing exposure to the art and the people creating it). The selected game-changers will be assisted in making the right connections to take their projects to the next level.

The J&B Hive Johannesburg functions as a workspace, a cafe as well as an events venue which regularly hosts internal as well as external events around entrepreneurship and creativity. The model revolves around a win-win for its members with support offered through various forms of resources such as infrastructure; which is inclusive of a co-creation space to operate from 6 days a week, a pool of video and camera equipment at members’ disposal as well as access to individual and industry specific mentors for peer-to-peer sessions 3 times a week - a programme for skill sharing. Included, are various learning events as well as financial investment, which is offered to selected projects and determined by the project’s potential to give back to the J&B Hive community as well as the greater entrepreneurship scene in the country, based on the scale of the opportunity presented.

Located in the centre of Braamfontein (100 Juta Street), the J&B Hive was founded by, and is now run by Independents United (innovation specialists), Creative Nestlings (a network of young Africans creatives), Black Nation Media Group (digital media and content strategists), and J&B whisky (a whisky which has always had an entrepreneurial spirit).

The call for applications, which was the organisation€™s second, was made in November last year.
