"A business leader is only as good as the people around him," was the humble response from Michael Jordaan, FNB CEO, after being awarded the Sunday Times Business Leader 2013 award last night.
"Recognition by our peers is always the greatest accolade; to the judges and most importantly to my colleagues at FNB, I thank you and have to say a business leader is only as good as the people around him."
Jordaan says the award also belongs to the people who shared FNB's vision of making FNB the most innovative bank in the world.
"When we obtained a telecoms license and when we were the first bank to offer iPads and smartphones, we were criticised and asked if FNB was a bank, a gadget retailer or a Telco service provider. The truth is, we were seeing a new way for people to bank. The pace of change in retail banking will only accelerate in coming years in even more unexpected directions.
"I am constantly surprised and overwhelmed by the brilliance and endeavour that has been unlocked in the bank. It shows me that an enabling workplace, a clear vision, shared values and empowering people at all levels of a company produces incredible results," says Jordaan.
According to him, for a relatively small country, South Africa has produced some of the greatest business leaders who have proven themselves on an international stage. "I believe we can all innovate on the grandest scale to achieve our fullest potential," he concludes.
