Into the hot seat

Welcome to another edition of South Africa's favourite business monthly. I'm proud to have taken over such a prestigious publication, with a rich history of insightful writing featuring the best of the best.

Bon voyage to outgoing Editor, Simon Lewis. Congratulations on all your success with Leadership and all the best for your future endeavours, I hope to build on your international acclaim.

I was first introduced to Leadership eight years ago upon first joining Cape Media as an Editor of two sister publications. Robbie Stammers was ruling Leadership's Editor's chair back in those days, producing some of the finest publications to date. He was another icon of the magazine's long history, picking up countless local and international awards and inspiring everybody to greater heights.

Luckily, I was able to edit Leadership in Sport back in those days alongside Stammers, picking up an unexpected, but nevertheless prestigious PICA award for the best supplementary magazine in the process.

Since then, I've been editing various publications in the field of mining, energy, logistics, finance and the maritime sector, only to come full circle in a way, back to the main event of Leadership magazine—when charismatic Cape Media Managing Director, Robert Arendse, approached me to take on the role.

To celebrate the inspiring ladies of South Africa for Women’s Month, you'll hear from the movers and the shakers from the different sectors of industry and beyond. Pressing topics of the day will be discussed, from equality in the boardroom, balancing family and career to making the most of the new opportunities for women.

Now, we all know that 'Diamonds are a girl's best friend', so who better to catch up with than international designer to the stars, Jenna Clifford, who shares some of the secrets to her success.

Women and mining are not words that are often used together, but is the role of women growing year upon year? We hear what is indeed happening to speed up these processes in SA's sleeping giant.

You'll also get no-nonsense insights from acclaimed sustainability expert Karin Ireton, who is never one to pull punches. Whenever I attend conferences, you can bet your house that Karin will ask the question that nobody else has the guts to—a true champion for change.

And to round things out with some motoring, I recently got my hands on the all new VW Tiguan R-line, which has gone from boring school runner to an exciting package.

Not to be outdone, we close with Leadership in Sport, as SA’s most ambitious ultra-distance endurance athlete Kim van Kets shares her adventures first-hand; together with a look into the financials behind 2017’s biggest sporting event, Mayweather vs. McGregor in Las Vegas.

Until next time,

Gregory Simpson
